ABOUT OUR RACE The Hawthorn Half Day Relay and Ultra began in 2006 as a 12-hour event for Teams of 6, Teams of 2 and individual runners. In 2015 we added a 6-hour event for Teams of 3 and individual runners. Both events start at 7:00 a.m. There are multiple divisions and age groups in which you can compete. Runners compete on a 5K loop throughout the day. Once there is less than 30 minutes to go in the race, runners will only be allowed to go out on the "short course"; 1K for the 6-hour event and 1/2 mile for the 12-hour event. Runners must cross the finish line prior to time expiring in order to receive credit for that lap. The winners in each division/age group are those that complete the most miles in the allotted time. We provide cold Gatorade, cold water, salty snacks, fruit, nuts, etc. throughout the day (unless not allowed due to COVID-19 requirements). Updates are provided approximately every hour, starting at 10:00 a.m. We normally have a massage therapist onsite beginning around 1:00 p.m. All participants receive a custom finisher's medal. Awards for the 6-hour race will be presented around 1:45 p.m. After the 12-hour race there is a meal provided for the 12-hour participants and awards will be presented around 7:45 p.m. The 2020 event was cancelled due to COVID-19, but we are excited to get back to racing again in 2021!
2019 RECAP Once again, weather played a part in the 2019 race. It was hot day for May, with a high of 87 degrees. A few late afternoon clouds and a strong breeze helped, but the weather conditions definitely added to the challenged of competing in an ultra event. Even with the heat, it was a great day for racing, the course was in great shape and everyone adapted to the conditions. A total of six records were broken in the 6 event. Four in the individual race and two is the team race. (see below) Thanks to Michael Harr for his race report. Click here to read his race recap. Also a big thanks to Jonathon Baumann for the video of our race. Click here to view. We didn't have an official race photographer, but we have received a number of pictures.
